Each line of this worksheet belongs to one numeral. It starts with a solid model written the way children are taught to form the digit, followed by dotted copies across the width of the page to trace over. The numeral and its word — zero, one, two — sit in the left margin, so counting words are being read at the same time as the figures are being written.

Choose 0 to 9 for a single page covering every digit, or 0 to 20 for two pages that go on to the teen numbers and twenty, where children practise placing two digits side by side. The guide lines option adds school-style writing lines — a solid top line, a dashed line halfway up and a solid baseline — so the numerals end up a consistent height. Turn them off for a cleaner sheet.

The numerals are drawn as vector outlines rather than typed, so the dots stay crisp and evenly spaced at any print size. There is a name line at the top. Slip the pages into a sheet protector or laminate them and the same sheet can be traced again and again with a dry-erase pen. Print at 100% on US Letter or A4 so the rows keep their spacing, and print one copy per child: the sheet comes out identical every time.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the range

0 to 9 on one page, or 0 to 20 across two pages.

  2. 2

    Decide about guide lines

Keep the writing lines for height control, or print plain rows for older children.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Trace and then write

Trace the dotted numerals from left to right, following the solid model at the start of the line.

The only form field is the name line. Tracing is meant for a pencil, though the pages also work in a tablet app with a stylus.
Yes. Laminate them or use a sheet protector and a dry-erase marker, and the same page can be traced every day.
The solid lines are the top and the baseline of the numeral and the dashed line marks the halfway point, which helps with digits like 4 and 5.
