This is the table as a test rather than as a reference. All 118 cells are drawn in their right places, including the two detached rows for the lanthanides and actinides and the dashed markers that show where they belong, but the cells themselves are empty. Group numbers run across the top and period numbers down the side, so the shape of the table is still readable while the contents are not.

Three hint levels suit different points in a course. Blank gives empty cells and nothing else, which is the hardest version. Numbers prints the atomic number in the corner of every cell, so the task is to supply the symbol that goes with it. First twenty fills in hydrogen to calcium as worked examples and leaves the rest to the pupil, which is the usual homework after the first lesson on the table.

Below the table is a short task list and a key of six squares to colour and name, so the same page can be used for marking metals and non-metals, or any grouping the lesson is about. Every empty cell is a form field, so a pupil can type the symbols on a laptop; the colouring is done after printing. The sheet is landscape and fills either US Letter or A4.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the hint level

No hints for a test, atomic numbers for ordinary practice, or the first twenty filled in as worked examples.

  2. 2

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  3. 3

    Fill in the symbols

Write the symbol for each element in its box, working across the periods or down the groups.

  4. 4

    Colour the key

Shade and name the groups your lesson is about, such as metals and non-metals, in the key at the bottom.
