A landscape sheet with one row per factor and a pair of columns per offer, one for the detail and one for a score. The thirteen rows cover the employer and role, base pay, bonus or commission, paid holiday and leave, pension or retirement plan, health and other insurance, hours and overtime, place of work and commute, remote or flexible working, training and progression, manager and team, start date and notice, and other costs or one-offs such as parking or a move.

The weight column is what makes it more than a list. You score each factor one to five for how much it matters to you before you look at the offers, score each offer one to five on that factor, multiply the two and write the result in the Score column. The bottom row totals each offer. A high total is a prompt to look again at the row that produced it, not an instruction, and the note at the foot of the sheet says so.

The first offer column arrives filled in with a worked example so you can see the level of detail that helps: not just a salary but how it is paid, not just a commute but how long it takes and by what. Choose two offers for a wider detail column or three to fit a whole shortlist, and US Letter or A4. Every cell is a form field, so you can fill it in on screen, or print it and work through it with a pen while you have the written offers in front of you.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Weight the factors first

Before you look at any offer, score each row one to five for how much it matters to you, so pay does not drown out the rest.

  2. 2

    Fill in each offer

Copy the detail from the written offer into the column for that employer, one row at a time.

  3. 3

    Score and total

Score each offer one to five per row, multiply by the weight, write it in the Score column and add each column up.

  4. 4

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. There is no watermark and no sign-up for your first 20 downloads each day; after that a free account keeps downloads going. You may print the file as often as you like for personal, school or business use.
Yes. Choose three offers before you download and the sheet lays out three detail and score column pairs. Two offers gives each one a wider detail column.
Yes. Every detail cell, every score cell and the totals row are form fields. Fill it in Adobe Reader, Preview, Chrome or Edge, or print it and write on it.
Leave the weight at nothing or write a one, and the factor drops out of the total. You can also type over a row heading, since the Factor column is editable too.
As a prompt, not a verdict. If the totals come out close, the decision is going to rest on something the table does not capture; if one is far ahead, look at which rows got it there and check them against the written offer.
Landscape, so the offer columns are wide enough to hold a sentence. It is one page in both US Letter and A4.
